It grows in the desert, with little water and gives sweet and powerful fruits
Palmier is the tree of life and resistance.
Like the struggles all over the world
for justice and freedom.
What is p.a.l.m.i.e.r? A 7-flat house in the center of Athens rented last summer in order to serve as a collective and solidarity housing project. 40 refugees of all ages and of 10 different nationalities reside in this house.
All of them used to live in refugee squats that no longer exist
as a result of the repressive policies of the new Greek government.
Having an urgent need for a housing alternative, locals and refugees active in the solidarity movement, attempt to create more safe and permanent infrastructures by renting a solidarity house. The idea behind it is to create a self-organized housing project, building upon the experiences of the last years and keeping up the red thread that links the different struggles.
— Solidarity will win!
Solidarity Will Win
In P.a.l.m.i.e.r. we want to create a solidarity community, a community of mutual support and shared responsibility. We will try to imply the principle “from each according to his/her ability, to each according to his/her needs.” This means that the residents who have an income are contributing by paying a proportion of the expemses according to their abilities, whilst those who lack any resources do not.
At the same time local and international solidarians will contribute the remaining amount. In this way people who lack the means of monetary contribution can still have a safe residence, as well as the time to regain power and autonomy in their lives. And the supporters will also be part of palmier community, not just as charitable people, but as comrades participating according to their abilities in a more just, re-distribution system.
Our first goal is to keep the house going for one year!
What is the monthly cost? 3.500*
Contributions by the residents
According to their abilities each period.
Contribution by Solidarity funding
To cover the part of the rent and insurance for the building, logistics and the cost of possible repairs.
*The cost compiles of two main elements: a) €2500 rent of the house b) €1000 cost for taxes, accounting, insurance, possible repairs. We are calling for support of persons and groups who share and feel the necessity of such projects in Athens. We are calling for people in solidarity, former residents of squats who now reside abroad, the various collectives and the solidarity groups.
